Goodbye Ma

All that knew Ma were blessed to have her in our lives as long as we did. She was a dynamo every time that I saw her and often thought that I was holding her back when I would try to help. She loved to cook and I couldn't tell you how many late night snacks she made for me without hesitation. Her dinner table was always welcome to anyone and I still haven't had a Thanksgiving dinner to compare to hers. She was a housewife, but if she is the standard I don't think that there are many true ones left in the world. Her family came first. Often even before herself.

She was married over 50 years and then spent 20 by herself. I often wondered how she filled her days alone, but she never stopped being a mother. And a grandmother too. She was the glue for a very proud family and I always admired her for that. She wasn't always the most vocal but her words were always sound and wise. She was the voice of reason when one was needed and always there to listen. I will miss the time that I spent getting to know her as an adult. That brought my appreciation for her to a new level.

I never saw her show fear. It wasn't in her character. I could come over to see her day or night and the back door was always open. I suppose that came from taking care of a family by herself while her husband was at war but it had to be more than that. She believed in herself and her whole family and passed that on to her sons. When I talk about the accomplishments in my life, I often say that whatever bad parts of me that I have accumulated through the years I found on my own. But all of the good came from my Mom and Dad. Through the years I have realized that Ma had led by example and passed that on to them first. I hope that I make her proud as she looks down on us now.

I hope that everyone will join me in celebrating her life. She was an incredible woman and an inspiration to all that knew her. I will always be proud of the example that she set. I love you Ma. I will miss you always. Thank you for all that you brought to my life. Goodbye until I see you again.
