1969 Road Trip

Lula is my mother-in-law; I married her middle son, Martin, in 1967.  We were teenagers when we married and Lula thought that was not such a good idea, but she finally came around and accepted the young love.

She was a WW11 war bride; I was a Viet Nam War bride.  That commonality helped to forge a common relationship that grew to a great love between the two of us.  In 1969, Martin was in San Antonia Texas in the Air Force; I was pregnant and left behind in Virginia. This was to be Lula's first grandchild.  She was so loving and giving, she offered to drive me to Texas to be with Martin, knowing Viet Nam was close at hand.  A most generous offer even for today's fast paced world.

We started our journey in the days before GPS, etc., and all we had was a map of the United States.  We both were afraid to try driving on the 'new' interstate highways, so we got out the map and traveled from small town to small town.   I was the map reading and she would say "Kay, what is the next town now?" It took us 3 days.  Lula drove every inch of the way since I had motion sickness the entire time.  Our first night was spent in Atlanta; neither of us had ever been in a large city, so when we got up early the next day to continue our journey, we both were shocked at the massive amount of early morning traffic.  Years later, we joked we were the original "Thelma and Louise", without going off the edge!  We both were very proud of this accomplishment by two smail town girls and talked about it for years.  I love her dearly.  She is now in her new heavenly body, at the side of our Lord, but with the same sweet, dignified spirit for sure.  There will never be another Lula Old Smith; she was one of a kind and I will always miss her. Pictures of her and other family members are all over our house so we will never forget our roots and the people we love.  May God comfort us all in the loss of Lula and help us celebrate her life.   Kay
