Obituary for John Newberry Guirkins

John Newberry Guirkins, 90, passed away December 5, 2014. John was born in Bath, North Carolina to the late Jesse H. and Rosa N. Guirkins. He was also predeceased by his brother, Edwin Guirkins and sisters, Mary Guirkins Elliot and Eleanor Guirkins Scott. John was a retired Battalion Chief of the Chesapeake Fire Department where he served for 26 years. He was also a United States Army veteran of World War II. John was a member of the Great Bridge Masonic Lodge #257 AF & AM.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 63 years, Polly W. Guirkins; son, John H. Guirkins and his fiancée Deborah A. Humpries; brother, Rudolph Guirkins and his wife, Nora; sisters, Dorothy Guirkins Morris and Kay Guirkins Bray, and a host of other family and friends.

A service to celebrate his life will be held Wednesday, December 10, 2014, at 2:00 pm at Graham Funeral Home with Pastor David E. Slayton officiating. Military honors and Masonic Rites will be accorded at the funeral home following the service. The Chesapeake Fire Department Honor Guard will serve as pallbearers. Burial will follow on Thursday, December 11, 2014, at 1:00 pm at Pamlico Memorial Gardens, Washington, NC. The family will receive friends at Graham Funeral Home on Tuesday, December 9, 2014 from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm.
