I’m not good with death. Who is, right? It’s such a confusing concept. Such a mix of feelings we can experience when someone we know passes. You want to hope and think they are in a better place, but maybe you’re mad, sad, confused, or numb. Maybe you feel guilty… not responsible… but guilty.
People float in and out of our lives. Especially in a music community like ours. You forge friendships, acquaintances, alliances and enemies. We may spend a few months in an intense friendship, only to grow apart, yet remain satellites in each other’s lives in the galaxy of our scene. Then- when a person passes… there is a loss. You can’t help but think about how that person affected your life- whether it was for a week or 20 years. You can’t ignore it. The impact was made.
I was talking with Karen (Ruben’s girlfriend) the other day about how closely Jay and Ruben passed. I told her that perhaps, as their souls passed and they were heading to wherever they were going, they bumped into each other. I could imagine Jay looking at Ruben and saying, “Hey man, what up?” Just like they were seeing each other at a show. Maybe they didn’t have to head off to the other side alone.
So tonight on 96X, I’m playing Black Jesus on The 757. It’s not a big gesture. I’m still trying to sort through my feelings. The ones I mentioned in the opening of this. Jay and I were close friends at one brief point of time- and as people do- we grew apart and became those friend satellites. This is my nod to him and a hug to his family and for those who were so much closer to him for much longer. The impact was made. May both Jay and Ruben be in peace.
Thank you to Paul and Deb for allowing me to share the Black Jesus mini doc... I'm gonna throw that up on 96X's facebook page tonight, as well. Tune in around 7:57pm on 96X to hear IOU from The Hardcore Norfolk Soundtrack.
