Obituary for Howard William Root, Jr.

Howard William Root, Jr.
VIRGINIA BEACH-Howard William "Bill" Root, went to be with the Lord on Monday, December 8, 2014. Also known as "Red", he was born in Hartford Connecticut on July 23, 1935, to Howard William Root, Sr. and Anna Mable McKinnon Root. He was raised in a tight knit family with three sisters, Carolyn R. Roy (deceased), Joan R. Hooper and Sally R. Marinelli.
After high school, Bill went on to serve his country in the US Navy for four years in logistics, being honorably discharged in Norfolk, Virginia in 1956. After the Navy, he won a position on the Norfolk Police Department, where he proudly served 18 years. His stellar investigative qualities propelled him into the field of maritime and admiralty investigation, culminating in 30 years with the law firm of Rutter and Mills, and 4 years with the firm of Montagna, Camden and Kline.
He served as a deacon at his church and sang in the choir, where he was blessed with an excellent singing voice. Known for his sense of humor and love of laughter, Bill could bring a smile to anyone with his impeccable timing, comedic accents and expressive face. He once quipped that his monument should read, "See? I told you I was sick!"
Bill loved his family, his church, his country and, also right up there - the Washington Redskins. He was known to yell instructions to any football coach on TV who would listen, or to any family member unfortunately blocking his line of sight.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary Jane Bond Root; sons, Bill Bond Root and Benny Keyth Root; daughter, Theresa Lynn Root Seymour; six grandchildren and ten great grandchildren; and sisters, Joan R. Hooper and Sally R. Marinelli.
Funeral service will be held on Friday, December 12, 2014 at 11 AM at Immanuel Baptist Church, 1012 N. Battlefield Blvd, Chesapeake, VA 23320. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 pm Thursday, December 11 at Graham Funeral Home, Chesapeake. Please visit his Book of Memories at www.grahamfuneralhome.com where you may leave a note to the family.
