Jean and the hurricane

It was fall of 1999. I lived in New Smyrna Beach, FL with all my worldly possessions which included family heirlooms and my mother's hand-painted china. Reconnecting with Jean - my long, long time friend since childhood who lived a few miles from me was so much fun and we were inseperable. But this fall found me visiting friends in Ohio and when it was nearly time to return to Florida, the news that a monster hurricane was heading right into Florida towards New Smyrna Beach prolonged my return. My little manufactured house and treasures stood in the path of the hurricane. I called Jean and asked her to check on my house and see that it was closed up and a few things moved away from the windows - as if that would help. The day before the hurricane was to make shore, Jean drove from her house, went into mine and took the time to move all the china and other breakables to the floor of a closet. Then Jean went to seek shelter for herself. The roads were jammed and the rain was starting to fall. Jean ended up sitting all night in a metal folding chair in the hospital (a designated shelter) waiting for the storm to do it's damage. At the last minute the storm turned north and never did arrive. That was the kind of friend Jean was. She sacrificed her comfort and safety just to save things I valued.
