Obituary for Jean Elizabeth Prickett

Jean Elizabeth Prickett
VIRGINIA BEACH-Jean Jamison Prickett, 78, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on December 18, 1935 to Harry L. Jamison and Grace Usher Miller Jamison. Jean began her life-long calling to Christian ministry at an early age. She accompanied her father on his trips into the “Tenderloin” section of Philadelphia and played piano for his evangelical ministry while she was still in grade school. She also served as a “second mother,” to her younger siblings Harry Jamison, Jr. and Carol VanCleve.
During her teens, Jean served various Christian ministries in the Philadelphia and New Jersey area. Because of her God-given artistic talents, Jean soon landed a job as a stage manager and widow dresser for Rev. Thea F. Jones at the old Metropolitan Opera House (“The Met”) at Broad and Poplar streets in Philadelphia. There she created window displays and worked on sets and prop design for Reverend Jones’s renowned illustrated sermons.
Jean married Ralph C. Leibig in December, 1957. Together, they had four girls: Sherrill Kauffman, Cara Beth Ott, Andrea Geyer, and Keli Wood. During the early years of her family life, Jean returned to college and obtained her B.S. in Education and M. Ed. in Reading from Holy Family College and Lehigh University respectively. Jean worked as a school teacher and Reading Specialist for over twenty years, but she never gave up her passion for Christian ministry. Throughout her lifetime, Jean and her family held Children’s Crusades for Full Gospel Businessmen’s Fellowship International. These meetings were held all across the USA, and involved presenting the Gospel to 200-300 children per meeting! During the three hour children’s crusades, Jean would play piano, lead in songs, regale the children with amazing flannel graph stories (complete with black light), and present puppet shows. Jean also authored two books: “What Do You Do for Excitement?” and “Salt Bag Religion.”
Jean married Earl Lester Prickett in 1989, and the couple soon moved to Florida. During their time in Florida, Jean and Earl had a ministry to homeless teenage boys. Despite their families’ concerns, jean and Earl held fast to their calling and impacted many young people’s lives for Christ. After the Lord called Earl home, Jean went to work as a professor at Daytona Beach Community College and then on to become the head of Darton College’s Reading Lab (Georgia). During this time, Jean became ill and needed to move to Virginia Beach to be near family members. Jean selflessly continued to serve by watching her granddaughter Jessica for five years, while her mother and father worked. As Jean’s illness progressed, Jessica’s parents Bill and Keli opened up their home to her. Jean loved living with her family around her, and it was with her family surrounding that she went to be with the Lord. On Easter Sunday, April 20, 2014 at 1:33 PM, Jean breathed her last labored breath and went to be with Christ. She is survived by her sister Carol VanCleve, and her daughters and son in laws. Jean has seven grandchildren: Lukis A. kauffman, Rachel A. Torrens, Siobhan Coleman , Deirdra Dubrowski, R.J. Geyer, Wesley Jamison Geyer, and Jessica Wood. She is also survived by three Great Grandchildren: Jude Bae Torrens, Mercedes Torrens, and Corban Roy Torrens.
A service to celebrate her life will be held on Friday, April 25, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at Graham Funeral Home, Chesapeake with Pastor Brad Shedd officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. Please visit her Book of Memories at www.grahamfuneralhome.com where you may view the service if unable to attend or leave a note to the family.
