Just like on TV

Jeff was my plebe year room mate at USNA.  He was a barrel of laughs and always called me "Pin".  Short for pinhead since I had such a small hat size.  Being from Texas, he also like to make fun of my accent.  When I reminded him that he was the one with the strange accent, he would say, "no way, I talk just like they do on TV".  All I could say to that was, not on the TV I watched....  Of course, I spent much of my youth on a ranch without TV so I could have missed out!

My favorite Jeff story though was a little more dramatic.  Being Plebes, we were always required to keep our uniforms immaculate and free of those loose threads that dangle from button holes and seam ends etc.  Of course, being in the Navy "dangling threads" just isn't appropriate nomenclature, so we called them "Irish Penants".  The preferred method of ridding our uniforms of these unsighly "penants" was to use a cigarette lighter to simply burn them off.  This method was also somewhat fun and more macho than nail clippers.

One morning while getting ready for school, I noticed Jeff staring intently at himself in the mirror.  He was fussing with a stray hair that just wouldn't cooperate.  Suddenly, I saw him pull out his lighter to burn off the offending "Irish Penant" strand of hair.  Needless to say, the ensuing excitement was histerical.  However, the smell of burning hair reminded me of being back on the ranch in Texas.  It smelled exaclty like branding cows!

Thanks for the memories Jeff!

God Bless your familiy in this time of loss!
