Obituary for Joel Walker Mumford

Joel Walker Mumford
Joel "Jay" Walker Mumford, Sr., 90, went to be with his Lord on June 25, 2018. He was born in Northampton County, NC to Cephus and Bina Mumford and was the youngest of 5 children. Jay was a member of Kempsville Baptist Church for 43 years where he served as a deacon, 5th grade Sunday School worker and greeter. He was a member of Gideon International and worked for 37 years for Norfolk-Portsmouth Beltline Railroad as chief clerk of car records. Jay was a man of few words, but he had a loving heart for people, especially his family.

Left to cherish his memory is the love of his life for 66 years, his "bride", Eva Hunt Mumford; children, Joel W. Mumford, Jr. (Janice) and Susan Lovette (Phil); grandchildren, Joshua Mumford, Jessica Estes (Robin); Samantha Morgan (Chris); and Nathan Martin (Shaina); 6 great-grandchildren, dear sister-in-law, Edna Gregory; and a host of other family and friends.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 28, 2018 from 6-7:30 p.m. at Graham Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 1112 Kempsville Road, Chesapeake. A service to celebrate his life will be held Friday, June 29, 2018 at 1 p.m. at Kempsville Baptist Church, 5204 Princess Anne Road, Virginia Beach, with Dr. Kelly Burris and Rev. Ken Carlton officiating. He will be privately laid to rest at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. At the request of the family, memorial donations may be made to Kempsville Baptist Church Building Fund.
