Obituary for Barbara Ann Hurlbert

Barbara Ann Hurlbert, 79, passed away on April 12, 2018 at Chesapeake Place in Chesapeake, VA. She was born on December 14, 1938 in Watertown, NY, and graduated from Watertown High School. She then later married Staff Sergeant Joe L. Hurlbert Sr. of the United States Army on July 4, 1959 and flew off to Munich Germany to be an army wife. They were married for 55 years. Barbara enjoyed dancing, bowling, gardening, boating, camping, cooking and spending time with her family and friends. Barbara was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1503 and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary where she served as Treasurer for a period of time. She often worked and played bingo at the VFW and other numerous activities such as visiting the Veterans at the Veterans Hospital in Richmond, VA and helping out whenever needed. Some of her fondest memories were also spent at Lake Gaston Americamps.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Gladys Monica; her husband, Joe L. Hurlbert Sr., and brother Francis Monica. She is survived by her sister Patricia Tolbert and husband Bill of Albany, NY; sister Jacqueline Lamica of Watertown, NY; brother Eugene Monica and wife Pamela of Rome, NY; her children Michele Curtis and husband Jeffery of Chesapeake, VA and Joe L. Hurlbert Jr. and wife Babette of Chesapeake, VA; grandchildren Tiffany Petty and husband Christopher of Ashburn, VA, Ashley Norvell and husband Brandon of Moyock, NC and Lindsey Hurlbert of Chesapeake, VA; great-grandchildren, Ellie and Laine Norvell of Moyock, NC.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Chesapeake Place Assisted Living and the staff of Westminster Canterbury Hospice for their compassionate care of Barbara.
A funeral service will be held at Quantico National Cemetery 18424 Joplin Rd, Triangle, VA 22172 on Wednesday, April 18, 2018 at 12 noon with Father Jack O'Hara officiating . A celebration of life will follow at VFW Post 1503 14631 Minnieville Rd, Dale City, VA 22193 from 2 PM - 4 PM.
