Obituary for Dorothy Virginia Hobbs

Dorothy Virginia Hobbs
On October 13, 2016, Dorothy Virginia Hobbs, 94, closed her eyes in death to this world and opened them in heaven to look into the face of Jesus, her Lord and Savior. She was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Phillip. Left to cherish her memory are her son, Paul Hobbs and his wife, Donna; her daughter, Debbie Nuckols and her husband, Michael; 6 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren; a sister, Elinor Todd; 2 nieces; and her loving caregivers and friends, Deneen, Bonnie, Bonita and Bessie.

Mom, or Maw, as she was affectionately called by her grandchildren, lived her life displaying the traits of the wife of noble character described in Proverbs 31. As a wife, she tirelessly worked beside our Dad in his business, Phil R. Hobbs and Son. As a businesswoman, she and our grandmother crafted a successful drapery and slipcover business for many years. During her years at Elizabeth River Baptist Church and Indian River Baptist Church, she served the Lord by teaching 5 year olds in Sunday School and Bible School. She was a member of the meals ministry committee at church, and her sweet gift of giving overflowed as she poured out her love to others in their time of need. Our own table was filled with the bounty of our father’s large garden as Mom, never the one to let anything go to waste, canned and froze delicious vegetables. As a mother, her ever-present love and devotion taught, enriched, and influenced our lives in ways that have passed down to her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Most importantly, Mom loved the Lord, as evidenced by the life she lived. Indeed, we rise up and call her blessed.

The family will receive friends Monday, October 17, 2016 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Graham Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 1112 Kempsville Road, Chesapeake. A time of remembrance and celebration of Mom’s life will be held on Tuesday, October 18, 2016 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. At the request of the family in lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Union Mission Ministries, 5100 E. Virginia Beach Blvd, Norfolk, VA 23502 or https://donate.unionmissionministries.org. Please visit www.grahamfuneralhome.com to view the service if unable to attend and to leave a condolence to the family.
