Condolence: On August 19th, many of us said good bye to our friend and colleague, Randy Sager. He was a wonderful son, brother, uncle and friend. I first met Randy when I began working in the Engineering Department at WAVY-TV on August 11, 1982, fresh out of college. He and I became fast friends. We would always greet each other with an exuberant, “Babes”. I can still hear him say it!
I remember how Randy loved to read, particularly Westerns by Louis L’Amour and books written by Stephen King. He introduced me to my first Stephen King novel “The Stand”. I had never read a book that was over 1,000 pages before but I couldn’t’ put it down. Randy also used to enjoy playing the guitar and doing needle point. Several years ago, he decided to stitch some pieces for a few us at work. When he presented me with mine, mounted and framed, he said it represented how he felt about our friendship. I was very moved by his thoughtful gift and it has been hanging up in my home ever since. Another thoughtful, sweet thing Randy used to do was hand out small heart shaped boxes of chocolates to all the women in the Engineering department on Valentine’s Day. It always made me smile to see that box of chocolate on my desk. I still think of him every Valentine’s Day!
Through the years, we shared many stories and life experiences. We confided in each other, had a lot of laughs and at times shed some tears. I know that he loved his family and adored his nephews and nieces! During Randy’s Master Control career at WAVY, he experienced many milestones with the station: going from signing off the air at 2:30 am in the morning to being on the air 24/7; a move into a new building down the street; the first station in the area to Broadcast in stereo; a dual affiliation with NBC and the WB, later replacing the WB with FOX; from various tape formats to various digital formats; continued news expansion and the biggest milestone; moving from an analog broadcast signal to a digital one. His career in Broadcasting extended over 25 years. I enjoyed working with him and looked forward to seeing him every day!
Recently, in May, he came by the station to visit. I was so glad to see him because I had not seen him since he left in 2009. We had a chance to visit for a bit. I took him around the station to see some of the long timers that he knew and snapped a few pictures with him. Little did we know it would be our final time together. I am so grateful that I got to see him and hug him one last time and I am thankful that I have those pictures and memories to remember him by. I feel blessed to have shared a big part of my WAVY history with him!
You signed off too soon, my friend! God must have needed another angel.

Rest in Peace, Babes!

Condolence: -2-

As the song says: "Has anybody here seen my old friend Randy,
can you tell me where he is gone?...
I just looked around and he's gone...
It seems the good, they die young..."

Condolence: I worked with Randy at WAVY for many years, and probably talked with him more over the 2way, or so it might seem. He would be tuning in my microwave signal for a news live shot, or video feed. Often I would stop by master control when I returned to the station after the news and he always gave a cheery, Big Dave! hello. I can still hear him say it.

Now after the service I am thinking of him, and the song "Abraham, Martin, and John" by Dion popped into my head. I have probably not thought about that song since the 60's, although I always liked it. I think, I realize what that song is really about. Wish I had thought about this at the service.

I'm so sorry he is gone, and my deepest sympathy.
Sincerely,

Dave Bennett

Condolence: My big cousin Randy always treated me as a friend even though he was older. Randy always had a welcoming attitude, time to spend with me, and cool cars! I find myself thinking of visiting my cousins and the many holidays or just plain old weekend get togethers we had before life spread us all apart. Condolences to my cousins at this time of great loss!
