Obituary for David Lee Christensen

David Lee Christensen
VIRGINIA BEACH – David Christensen, 71, passed away suddenly on June 4, 2016. He was born in New London, CN to the late Fern and Idell Christensen. David served 39 years in US Naval Reserves and Individual Ready Reserves until his retirement in 2005 as sonar chief. He was employed by IBM (23 years) until the copier division was sold to Eastman Kodak where he worked 10 years longer. After retirement he volunteered and then was employed by Children’s Harbor. David found joy in the diverse challenges of work at CH and the people and children he met. His ability to stretch a dollar served the non-profit well.

He is survived by his wife of almost 50 years, Gloria and their daughter, Rebecca Mattox (Marshall); grandsons, Stewart Tyler (Chelsea), David Marshall, William Seth and John Walter; great-granddaughter, Elvera “Ella” Christine; sisters, Judy Kight of Jacksonville, NC and Sara Biancorosso of Bracey, VA; brother-in-law, Gary Stewart (Barbara) of Virginia Beach VA and sister-in-law, Susan Freeman (Clyde, III), of Huntington TN. David has a host of nieces and nephews, with whom he enjoyed playing and working with on their projects.

A memorial service will be held at Graham Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 1112 Kempsville Road, Chesapeake at 5:30 pm on Saturday, June 18, 2016. The family will receive friends before and after the service. Burial will be at sea. In David’s world a great day was always spent in and on the water.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Ware Academy Fund, 7936 John Clayton Memorial Highway, Gloucester, VA 23061. Ware Academy with its parent association reaches public school and home-schooled children in the community and shares the rich educational experiences it offers. Please visit his Book of Memories at www.grahamfuneralhome.com where you may view the service if unable to attend or leave a note to the family.
